Morphogenesis: FGF branches out
نویسنده
چکیده
Signalling via tissue-specific receptors for fibroblast growth factor is important in tracheal branching and mesodermal patterning in Drosophila; both processes may involve a common primary response - detachment and directed migration of the target cells - that is conserved from worms to mammals.

Branching morphogenesis of the Drosophila tracheal system.
Many organs including the mammalian lung and vascular system consist of branched tubular networks that transport essential gases or fluids, but the genetic programs that control the development of these complex three-dimensional structures are not well understood. The Drosophila melanogaster tracheal (respiratory) system is a network of interconnected epithelial tubes that transports oxygen and...
متن کاملThe Drosophila homologue of SRF acts as a boosting mechanism to sustain FGF-induced terminal branching in the tracheal system.
Recent data have demonstrated a crucial role for the transcription factor SRF (serum response factor) downstream of VEGF and FGF signalling during branching morphogenesis. This is the case for sprouting angiogenesis in vertebrates, axonal branching in mammals and terminal branching of the Drosophila tracheal system. However, the specific functions of SRF in these processes remain unclear. Here,...
متن کاملTransgenic myocardial overexpression of fibroblast growth factor-1 increases coronary artery density and branching.
Fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-1 plays important roles during myocardial and coronary morphogenesis. FGF-1 is also involved in the physiological response of the adult heart against ischemia, which includes cardiomyocyte protection and vascular growth. In the present study, we have generated transgenic mice with specific myocardial overexpression of the gene. Transgene expression was verified by...
متن کاملThe Drosophila Extradenticle and Homothorax selector proteins control branchless/FGF expression in mesodermal bridge-cells.
The stereotyped outgrowth of tubular branches of the Drosophila tracheal system is orchestrated by the local and highly dynamic expression profile of branchless (bnl), which encodes a secreted fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-like molecule. Despite the importance of the spatial and temporal bnl regulation, little is known about the upstream mechanisms that establish its complex expression pattern...
متن کاملNodal and FGF coordinate ascidian neural tube morphogenesis.
Formation of the vertebrate neural tube represents one of the premier examples of morphogenesis in animal development. Here, we investigate this process in the simple chordate Ciona intestinalis Previous studies have implicated Nodal and FGF signals in the specification of lateral and ventral neural progenitors. We show that these signals also control the detailed cellular behaviors underlying ...
